Cairo was born on 17 August 2006 weighing a healthy 6 lbs exactly. He was born with a heart
condition called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome, which means that only the right side of his heart
had developed completely during pregnancy. This is a very rare condition but since his diagnosis
when I was 23 weeks pregnant, we have met and spoken to many parents whose children have the same
condition.

This condition means that you have the following three options for your unborn child.
1 - Termination
2 - Let them be born and pass away naturally within a few days after birth.
3 - Three stage surgery.

We opted for choice 3 which meant he had to have three surgeries more than likely before he was 3 or
4, the first taking place during the first week of a child’s life. The second when he would have
been about six months old and the third when he was about two or three. Finally, he would have had
to have a heart transplant when he reached his teens. His first stage operation (Fontan) took
place when he was five days old. It was a successful operation, but sadly he passed away the
following day as his poor little heart just could not take it any more. Cairo has other brothers
and sisters whom miss him dearly and we speak about him everyday. His pictures are everywhere in
the house.

Just like our other children, he is the most precious person in our lives.

We will miss you forever and always Cairo, but we know that you are at peace now. Mummy xxxxxx

Mother and Baby

“What makes a mother'

I thought of you and closed my eyes
And prayed to God today.
I asked what makes a Mother
And I know I heard him say...

A mother has a baby
This we know is true.
But, God, can you be a mother
when your baby is not with you?

Yes, you can He replied
With confidence in His voice.
I give many women babies
When they leave is not their choice.

Some I send for a lifetime,
And others just for a day.
And some I send to feel your womb,
but there's no need to stay.

I just don't understand this God,
I want my baby here.
He took a breath and cleared his throat
And then I saw a tear.

I wish I could show you
What your child is doing today.
If you could see your child smile
With other children and say:

'We go to earth to learn our lessons
Of love and life and fear.
My mummy loved me oh so much
I got to come straight here.

I feel so lucky to have a mum
Who has so much love for me.
I learned my lessons very quickly,
My mummy set me free.

I miss my mummy Oh so much,
But I visit every day.
When she goes to sleep
On her pillow is where I lay.

I stroke her hair and kiss her cheek
And I whisper in her ear.
Mummy don't be sad today,
I'm your baby and I'm here.'

So, you see my dear sweet one,
Your children are not blue.
Your babies are here in MY home,
They'll be at Heaven's gate waiting for you.

So now you see what makes a mother,
It's the feeling in your heart.
It's the love you had so much of,
Right from the very start.
